Fishermen have long been fans of fishing reels made in Japan. They are sturdy, durable and top quality. They are also quite expensive to purchase outside of the country, which often deters hobbyists. However, with our service, you can buy reels straight from Japan and have them shipped to you for much cheaper than buying from your home countries! In addition to being able to find great reels on many Japanese fishing sites, you can also find well-kept second-hand reels on Yahoo Auctions, which can often save you even more money.
Previously, we've talked about the best winter fishing gear you can get, as well as where to get fishing tackle from Japan. Today, we're introducing some of our favorite reels of the moment which you can pick up through us!
1. Daiwa BG
The Daiwa Black Gold (BG) series has always been a great rod for beginners, and it just keeps getting better. The reel’s body and side cover are made of black anodized aluminium and is supertough yet lightweight. The 3000 series, in particular, is incredibly hardy, and is capable of handling inshore saltwater fishing. It even has a waterproof drag system and is partially sealed, which helps a lot with its durability. Most exciting is the Daiwa BG’s price range -- some of the cheapest models can go for as low as JPY9,000 new! Regardless of whether you are new to spinning reels or a seasoned pro, this is one that is great for your collection.
2. Shimano Stradic
Shimano rods are a favorite of many, and we are no different. The Stradic FK is a versatile rod that has been precisely engineered to make it easier for you to smoothly reel in all types of fish, regardless of size. The reels use Shimano’s X-Ship technology, which ultimately improves the durability of its internal drive system. The Stradic FK has a full metal body, which means it’s slightly heavier, but this allows it to support their high precision internals. If you’d rather a lighter reel that’s similarly excellent, the CI4+ model would be a great choice. It is particularly lightweight due to a Magnumlite rotor and has an impressively responsive drag.
3. Okuma Ceymar Lightweight
If you’re a beginner, or just new to spinning reels, this might be the reel for you. Okuma’s Ceymar reel is not for heavy-duty fishing with a maximum drag pressure of 5lbs, but will do great for precision fishing. It also has an oiled felt drag system to prevent corrosion, with a standard 7+1 ball bearing system and an anti-reverse reel. Compared to the other spinning reels on this list, its definitely much cheaper, and would be perfect if you’re just starting out, or want an easy reel to add to your collection.
4. Shimano Chronarch
The Shimano Chronarch is as sexy as it is versatile, and is one of our favorite baitcasting reels. The MGL comes in a carbon composite frame that utilizes Shimano’s X-Ship technology for greater gear stability and durability. It also has Micro Module gearing, which helps make the retrieve smoother, and a Magnumlite spool to reduce casting effort. With Dartanium II drag washers and an SVS Infinity breaking system, you’ll be able to reel in most things with ease. We find this to be one of the most functional reels at an incredibly affordably price.
5. Daiwa Goldcast
We round off our list with Daiwa’s Goldcast reel, a compact beauty that is both classy and practical. This gold reel has a full metal body complete with solid metal gears, which is why it veers towards being slightly pricier, but still very affordable. It also has the line size and capacity written on the cone, which is perfect for those of us who maybe aren’t so great at remembering gear ratios and the like. The retrieve on this reel is quite quick at a 4:1:1 gear ratio, but it’s not anything too difficult to manage.
