Yuuyami Doori Tankentai
Considering the stronger cultural barriers of the 90s, it's not hard to see why Yuuyami Doori Tankentai never made it out of Japan. Set in a small fictional city during the malaise of Japan's economic recession, the game's standout feature is its atmosphere – both gloomy yet oddly nostalgic and sporting an appealing mix of horror, myth, and Japanese folklore.
The game is divided into chapters, and at the start of each one, you choose one of three protagonists to play as. This isn't just a cosmetic choice as it shapes how the story unfolds throughout that chapter.
Each chapter plays out in two distinct phases. In the first, you have five minutes to roam the local school, chatting with classmates to explore clues about the current mystery. Since each protagonist has different friends, the information you unearth varies depending on who you play as.

The second phase gives you ten minutes to explore the wider town. You can navigate using an in-game map or, if you're fortunate to own a complete original release, the physical map included in the case.
While the game's reception was mixed upon release, it has since been reevaluated, slowing earning a small cult of passionate supporters. With renewed interest in horror games over recent years, its unique blend of urban legend, time pressure, and melancholy atmosphere feels ripe for rediscovery by modern players.
Policenauts
Policenauts is an adventure game developed and directed by the legendary Hideo Kojima. First released for the PC-98, it later made its way to the 3DO, PlayStation, and lastly the SEGA Saturn. (The Saturn version was even intended for a western release, but translation issues ultimately led to its cancellation.)
The story follows Jonathon Ingram, a former police offer who – during testing of a new space suit – is accidentally launched into space and presumed dead. Twenty-five years later, he's discovered alive, having survived in cryogenic suspension. Jonathon returns to Earth to find that everything has changed: his now ex-wife has remarried, and the police force he one belonged to no longer exists.

By 2040, Jonathon is working as a private detective when his ex-wife comes to him , requesting he investigate the disappearance of her current husband. Initially, Jonathon refuses. But when she is murdered shortly after their meeting – shot dead by a man on a motorbike – he takes the case, only to get swept up into a web of secrets and conspiracies far bigger than he expected.
Gameplay satisfyingly blends visual novel-style storytelling with bursts of action, including short FPS segments. But the narrative is where this game holds true staying power, sporting a mix of noir, mystery and hard sci-fi that showcases Kojima's early talents for exploring the ethical dilemmas posed by science and technology. Kojima's penchant for these themes would seem them re-emerge in later series such as metal gear and the fascinating death stranding games

LSD: Dream Emulator
LSD: Dream Emulator is PS1 era experimentation and genre defiance at its best. Difficult to describe and possibly harder to categorise, it's essentially pure abstract exploration. The world you explore – with no directions, no objectives and no hand holding – is built from dreams, specifically those from the diary of Hiroko Nishikawa, an employee at Asmik Ace the studio behind the game.
Each session drops you into a series of randomly generated environments that swing wildly between the whimsical, the unsettling, and the downright bizarre. You may wander through a serene, sunlit meadow one minute, only to be plunged into a warped nightmare-scape the next. Touching nearly any object or surface in the environment can instantly transport you somewhere new, and each “play-through” lasts around 10 minutes before your avatar “wakes up” and logs a pseudo report card/ review of the trip before returning you to the main menu.

The games dreamlike, surreal atmosphere – equal parts fascinating and unnerving has earned LSD: Dream Emulator a cult following, mainly driven by content creators in the 2010's. There are very few comparable experiences out there, especially not with the particularly unique PS1 era aesthetics – play it to understand it.
Mizzurna Falls
Though the West would eventually be graced with the bizarre and often goofy Deadly Premonition - an open-world title inspired by Twin Peaks (despite its developers’ adamant denials, possibly for legal reasons) - Japan had already received its own Twin Peaks-like experience nearly a decade earlier in the form of Mizzurna Falls.
The game begins on Christmas Day, 1998, when a young girl named Kathy Flannery is found unconscious in a forest, apparently after being attacked by a bear. Shortly after, another girl from the same school, Emma Rowland, disappears without a trace. You play as Matthew Williams, a classmate of Emma’s who is determined to find his friend, even if it means delving into the dark secrets surrounding the town.

The story unfolds in real time over the course of seven days, giving you choices to make, interactions to engage in, and time to manage - all of which affect the sequence of events and determine which of multiple endings you receive.
From a gameplay perspective, Mizzurna Falls was truly ahead of its time. It offers an open world where you collect clues, solve puzzles, and explore freely - often with the assistance of what is clearly meant to be an old VW Beetle - while interacting with a diverse cast of characters, each with their own routines and habits.
Despite its ambition, experiencing all the game’s events (let alone unlocking the most interesting of its three available endings) is difficult without a guide. This may be one reason why the game was never officially ported to Western audiences, despite its American setting.

Boku no Natsuyasumi
A slightly warmer and light-hearted title to close out our list - and one brimming with charm and positivity - is Boku no Natsuyasumi. The title translates to My Summer Vacation, and that’s exactly what it’s about. You play as a nine-year-old boy named Boku, spending his summer holidays at his relatives’ countryside home.
Set in 1975, the game leans heavily into nostalgia - for a time often painted as simpler and more carefree, all seen through the eyes of a child. There are no pressing objectives or looming deadlines here. Each day, you’re free to wander the village, chat with locals, collect insects, go fishing, play games, and stumble upon hidden secrets at your own pace.
In short, Boku no Natsuyasumi invites you to relive the spirit of a slow, lazy summer - without the pressure of tasks or missions to tick off. It’s an incredibly relaxing experience, helped along by a gentle, idyllic soundtrack. Words can only do so much to capture the feeling it creates, but anyone who loves Japan should experience it at least once.
