What Is an Anime Cel? (The Production Process)

Anime celluloid, or simply an anime cel (セル画, seru-ga), is a single frame from an anime, hand-drawn on a transparent celluloid sheet. Back in the days when computers, software, and digital tools were not yet widely used in anime production, cels played a key role in analog animation. The entire process was very time-consuming, but it’s exactly what gives classic anime its distinctive, one-of-a-kind charm.
Step-by-step, anime production using cels works as follows:
- Storyboard. First, the director creates a storyboard for the episode, which includes frame-by-frame sketches.
- Background. Artists paint detailed backgrounds on separate sheets of paper using watercolors and airbrushes.
- Anime cels. A sketch is first drawn on paper, then a transparent celluloid sheet is placed on top of it. The artist traces the lines of the sketch onto the celluloid, and then the image is colored using paints. These images can include characters, vehicles like cars and helicopters, or any other objects needed for the animation.
Each original anime cel also has a letter and number code in the top right corner, indicating its layer and place within the sequence. So when you buy an anime cel, it may come with the original sketch as well, and sometimes even the background!
- Photography. Once everything is drawn, animators place each anime cel on its transparent sheet over a painted background and photograph the frame. By shifting, replacing, and layering multiple cels over a fixed background, they create the illusion of motion on screen.

So why did Japanese studios use this kind of animation process instead of just drawing each frame on paper? Despite seeming complicated, it was actually faster and more efficient because they didn’t need to redraw the background for every frame.
Just think about it, 1 second of anime can contain 8 to 24 frames, and a 24-minute episode can include anywhere from 700 to 10,000 frames, sometimes even more. That’s why using anime cels helped animators save a lot of time in the pre-digital era.
