Important Update for Our Swiss Clients - ZenMarket is planning to implement an import VAT precharge system starting from February 1st, 2025 for all parcels to the Switzerland.
Once implemented, ZenMarket will pre-charge 8.1% import VAT for items purchased via our proxJDirectItems Shopping service and being shipped to Switzerland.
Why is this change necessary?
The Swiss government has implemented Value Added Tax regulations requiring 8.1% VAT to be declared and paid for imported goods, while some basic necessities such as food, medicine and books are subject to the reduced rate of 2.6%.
As a company with a certain trade volume with Switzerland, we are required to pre-charge this tax for the parcels we ship.
Details About the Import VAT Pre-charge Implementation
ZenMarket will apply a standard 8.1% Import VAT pre-charge on all parcels to Switzerland. This VAT pre-charge is mandatory for most items, but there will be an opt out option if your items qualify for different taxations rates (e.g. 2.6% for some basic necessities like food and medicines). The customer should check whether the parcel is eligible for exemption if you choose this option. Please check the box if you wish to prepay VAT in advance for convenience.

Import VAT pre-charge will apply to all parcels (the total value of items and shipping) valued higher than 62 CHF.

FAQ
Q: How will I benefit from this change?
A: Our team will handle the VAT declaration and payment process on your behalf, ensuring a seamless shopping experience. This pre-payment system also helps to reduce customs clearnace time and complicated customs procedures.
Q. Do I have to pay customs duties and other fees other than the pre-charged VAT?
A: Yes, customs duties are levies imposed by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS). Unlike VAT, they do not refer to the value, but to the type (content) and weight (gross weight) of the goods. According to the Value Added Tax Act (VAT Act, Art. 54), customs duties and other charges (including transport costs) are taxable. You can estimate your customs duties with this calculator.
Q: Do I have to pay import costs if my parcel was not pre-charged?
A: All consignments from abroad are liable for customs duty and VAT. If the duties are less than CHF 5, you will not be charged.
