Your Easy Guide to Beyblades

Beyblades

Introduction

Whether you’ve seen them on TV, at a friend’s house, or at the store - Beyblades are one of the most iconic battle toys to hit the scene in Japan, and eventually around the world too.

This read is going to be your full guide to Beyblades. From the history, to the different types, how to buy Beyblades in Japan, and how you can make use of your new toys as well! Whether you’re brand new to the concept or someone who wants to relive their childhood, this will be an enjoyable and useful read.

Beyblade History

Beyblades 1999

The history of Beyblades dates all the way back to 1999, when Takara Tomy developed the Beyblade and had it first hit the market in Japan. The idea was inspired by the traditional spinning tops known as “Beigoma”. The modern Beyblade however was designed to be more aggressive than the Beigoma - and also came with customization features.

The concept of Beyblades was fun and simple - it was to blend the excitement of a toy with the strategy of a 1 on 1 battle. This made it appeal to different audiences, from collectors all the way to those who love a good challenge with their friends, and others who also enjoy a good game. Everyone and their friends were wondering how to buy Beyblades in Japan. That’s right, everyone wanted their hands on one or more

As time went on, Beyblades became more than just a fun little battle toy in Japan - it became a worldwide hit. The sheer popularity of the toy in Japan had Beyblades come with their own TV anime series, a manga series, and plenty of merchandise for fans and players - better known as “Bladers”.

Bladers are what the players are called inside the Beyblades community. The game is simple - Two bladers show up with their Beyblades and declare a battle inside the Beyblades stadium, known as the “Beystadium”. The bladers wind up their Beyblades, and at the count of 3 release their beyblades in the Beystadium - usually followed by the "Let it rip!" catchphrase. After a hard fought Beyblade battle, the last Beyblade spinning is declared the winner.

Let it rip Beyblades catchphrase

During its time - and even today - Beyblade had its breakthrough in pop culture, with everyone knowing what Beyblades is. Whether they played with them, watched the TV anime, or even got ahold of some merchandise, the history of Beyblades is rich and is no stranger to those who grew up with them.

Types Of Beyblades

Types of beyblades

Like every battle, there comes different styles. Beyblades are no exception. Depending on the type of Blader you are, you have four different styles of Beyblades to choose from, all designed a little differently. Just like every style, all four Beyblades come with their own strengths and weaknesses, and fare better against one style over the other.

Attack Beyblades

Attack beyblades

The first style is the Attack Beyblades. As you may have guessed in the name - they are the most attack-driven Beyblades. They are fast, they hit hard, and they are the best type of Beyblade if you are into an offensive play-style.

Here are the strengths of the Attack Beyblades:

  • Hard Hitting: Which knocks the opponents out of the stadium or causes them to lose their spin faster
  • Fast and Agile: Which causes them to build more momentum and catch the opponent off guard.
  • Aggressive: Which is ideal for players who want to end battles quickly on their own accord.
  • Effective Against Endurance Types: As they are able to disrupt their spin much easier.

Here are the weaknesses of the Attack Beyblades:

  • Low Endurance: Due to their design prioritizing speed and power, they are prone to losing their spin quicker than other Defence or Endurance Beyblades.
  • Need Precision: Due to the aggressive nature of Attack Beyblades, you have to be more precise with controlling it.
  • Weak Against Defence Beyblades: Defence Beyblades are designed to absorb impact, making it a tough battle for Attack Beyblades
  • Inconsistency: Although catching the opponent off guard can be beneficial, the sporadic movement of Attack Beyblades can come with inconsistent performances.

Defense Beyblades

Defense Beyblades

The second style we will be going over is the Defence Beyblades. As the name suggests - they are the most defence-driven Beyblades. They are designed to be durable, stable, and able to withstand opponent attacks. They are the best type of Beyblade if you are into a defencive play-style.

Here are the strengths of the Defence Beyblades:

  • High Stability: Designed with a wider base and heavier weight distribution, which makes them very stable and hard to knock out..
  • Shock Absorption: Designed to absorb the impact of attacks without losing much spin speed or stability.
  • Versatile Tips: The tips of Defence Beyblades are shaped to minimize surface contact, reducing how effective the opponents hits are.
  • Effective Against Attack Beyblades:Due to their design and ability to absorb attacks, Defence Beyblades are particularly effective against Attack Beyblades, often spinning for longer in battle.

Here are the weaknesses of the Defence Beyblades:

  • Less Agility: Their design makes them much less agile, making Defence Beyblades less likely to dodge attacks or quickly change positions.
  • Weak Against Endurance Beyblades: Defence Beyblades might have trouble battling Endurance Beyblades, which are designed to spin longer, making them vulnerable in matches that go on for longer.
  • Predictable Movement: Defence Beyblades can be more predictable in their movement compared to Attack Beyblades for instance. This predictability can be a disadvantage in battle.
  • Limited Offence: Defence Beyblades might have trouble with attacking opponents, relying on spinning for longer to secure the victory.

Endurance Beyblades

Endurance Beyblades

The third style is the Endurance Beyblades. They are the most stamina-driven Beyblade. They are designed to spin longer than opponents in battle. They are the best type of Beyblade if you are into a more passive and safe strategy.

Here are the strengths of the Endurance Beyblades:

  • Long Spin Time: The design of Endurance Beyblades allows them to spin much longer than the other three Beyblades.
  • Strong In Long Battles: The longer the battle goes, the stronger Endurance Beyblades get - especially if they don’t get hit.
  • Withstand Attacks: Not as strong as Defence Beyblades, but they can withstand attacks and lose their spin slower.
  • Effective Against Defence Beyblades: The limited offence of Defence Beyblades combined with the longer spins of Endurance Beyblades makes a very favourable matchup for Endurance Beyblades.

Here are the weaknesses of the Endurance Beyblades:

  • Weak Against Attack Beyblades: Although somewhat durable, aggressive attacks from Attack Beyblades may be too much to handle for Endurance Beyblades.
  • Less Defence: Design isn’t as sturdy, heavy, or stable as Defence Beyblades.
  • Predictable Movement:Much like Defence Beyblades, their movements are predictable and can be a disadvantage in battle.
  • Weak In Close Combat:When being more physical against the opponent, Endurance Beyblades may run into issues with absorbing constant attacks.

Balance Beyblades

Balance Beyblades

The final style we will be going over is the Balance Beyblades. These are the most balance-driven all rounded Beyblades. They are designed to be a hybrid of the other three Beyblades. Although not specialists, they are designed for some attacks, good defence, and a bit of a longer spin time. They are the best type of Beyblade if you are into a safe and consistent playstyle.

Here are the strengths of the Balance Beyblades:

  • Versatile: They show qualities of attack, defence, and endurance - making them a safe choice.
  • Adaptability: Since Balance Beyblades aren’t specialists, they can adapt to different types of battles.
  • Well-Rounded:Their performance is always consistent and well-rounded in battle.
  • Effective Against All Beyblades: Due to being able to adapt in battle, they can be effective against all Beyblades during battle.

Here are the weaknsesses of the Balance Beyblades:

  • No Specialties: Since Balance Beyblades are considered hybrids, they have no specialty and may struggle in some instances against other beyblades.
  • Predictability: Due to their consistency, this may be a disadvantage against some experienced Bladers.
  • Complex Strategy:Since Balance Beyblades aren’t as straight-forward with their strengths like other Beyblades, they require more experience to come up with a winning strategy.
  • Varied Performance: Depending on how you customized your Balanced Beyblades, this is an instance where the performance can be varied instead of consistent. Be careful!
