Most Popular Japanese Rice Cookers

Like in many places in Asia, rice is an essential part of the Japanese diet. Japanese people take comfort in eating the rice they've been accustomed to since childhood, to the extent that they often want to eat rice no matter where they are in the world.

Of course, the specifics of the rice being cooked are important, but a rice cooker that cooks it deliciously is key! There are of course rice cookers overseas, but they cannot compare to rice cookers made in Japan, with their high quality and additional functions & features, on top of their ability to cook your rice perfectly every time. Some people even buy rice cookers as souvenirs when they visit Japan!

In this article, we will explain the characteristics of Japanese rice cookers and introduce 8 carefully selected rice cooker models (with English text!) which can be used to up your rice game outside of Japan!

Do You Need An Expensive Rice Cooker?

For some people, a pot with a lid is enough to serve as a rice cooker. But for those who cook rice on a regular (i.e. every day) basis, a rice cooker that is good quality, durable, and reliable becomes a necessity.

However, especially for first-time buyers, the difference between low-end models and high-quality options might not be immediately obvious. So what makes a "quality" rice cooker?

ZenMarket Japan Japanese Food Rice Cooker

Below is a video comparing rice cookers that cost $350 and $40. Only the quality of the final product (rice!) was tested, using the same amount of rice and water, and the same basic cooking functions for both machines. Indeed it is not a regrettable purchase!

What Makes Japanese Rice Cookers "High-Quality"?

Rice cookers are now relatively easy to purchase in any country, but it can still be difficult to get the perfect glossy, moist rice, since it can stick badly to the cooker and become dry due to overcooking.

In Japan, quality comes first. In addition, the Japanese climate and temperature change drastically between seasons, so adapting settings is essential. As a result they use advanced, quality materials and technology to automatically adjust cooking times and temperatures.

In many other countries, the priority is cost rather than performance. This means that the product skews outside Japan often have to be made at a lower cost with fewer functions, even if they are produced by the same company. As such, it's easy to understand that people on the hunt for better quality options will look for the "Made in Japan" mark.

Rice cookers from Japan not only have high performance, but they also support various detailed cooking functions, allowing you to cook fresh, fluffy and delicious rice as well as other dishes and even cakes! There are models in variety of price ranges; from basic models in the 10,000 yen range to high-end luxury models that cost upwards of 100,000 yen, so it's easy to find one that suits your needs and budget.

Since rice is the country's staple food, and Japan is well-known for its technology, Japanese manufacturers apply their skills and advanced knowledge to making rice cookers. Whichever model you buy, you can rely on it to cook delicious rice without fail!

An Essential Adapter For Using Japanese Cookers Outside Japan

One thing to keep in mind is that in many cases, if you want to use a Japanese-made rice cooker overseas, you will need a transformer or adapter; the standard for grid power in Japan is 100V, as opposed to 240V in Europe and Australia, and 120V in the United States.

To avoid any issues (like your electronics getting damaged, or even catching on fire!), please check the voltage wherever you plan to use your new Japanese rice cooker and prepare the appropriate transformer. Thankfully transformers can generally be purchased relatively cheaply at most electronics stores and even on Amazon. Just make sure that the transformer steps down to Japanese voltage, and will be able to supply your Japanese rice cooker with sufficient wattage to power the device.

Once you have the appropriate transformer, you can be sure that you can operate your rice cooking device safely - assuming you can plug it in. Customers in the US and Canada can rejoice - the Japanese plug is the same as the one in (most places in) the States! Japan, the United States and Canada typically both use plug A (pictured below). You should just double check though, as some places may use type B plugs.

Plug adapter types

Customers in the UK and Ireland will need to purchase a type G plug adapter in order to use their rice cooker, while customers in Australia and New Zealand will need to purchase a type I plug adapter. Thankfully, plug adapters are quite cheap - please keep in mind that the adapter should be used in conjunction with a transformer, not on its own in most cases.

Too confusing? That's okay, there are many multi-adapters available that should be able to cover most regions, as well as have USB support.

HITACHI Pressure Steam Rice Cooker IH 10 Cups [RZ-KV180Y]

Just like the earlier Hitachi model, this rice cooker uses pressure and steam technology to augment the IH functionality. Like normal pressure cookers, the pressure inside this cooker is high, reaching up to 1.3 atm and 107℃ to produce high temperature steam to cook rice quickly.

It is also equipped with a steam recycling mechanism, in which the trapped steam turns into water, which is then re-heated to become steam again, in order to reheat the rice periodically, keeping it warm and fresh for hours.
