1946年7月7日熊本市に生まれる。
1972年初めての絵本『ぼくのべんちにしろいとり』（至光社）を出版。
イギリス・フランス・スウェーデンで発刊。
1990年、絵本『風とひょう』イタリア・ボローニャ国際児童図書館展グラフィック賞受賞。
1991年北鎌倉に葉祥明美術館開館。
1992年郵政省ふみの日記念切手に"ジェイク"採用される。
1997年絵本『地雷ではなく花をください』日本絵本賞読者賞受賞。
自由が丘にミュージアムショップ「JAKE HOUSE」をオープンする。
1999年郵政省「はあとメール」挿絵。
2002年8月、葉祥明阿蘇高原絵本美術館開館。
現在、海外展や福祉活動など幅広く活躍中
