『東海道五拾三次庄野 白雨（はくう）』は、道中の夕立を描いた名作です。坂道を上って行くのは、客を籠に乗せた籠かきと、筵（むしろ）を背負った男。対する傘をさした男と、鍬を担いだ男が下って行く描写は、まるで映画のワンシーンのよう。顔が見えないのが、かえって雨の激しさが伝わり、雨音が聞こえてくるようです。
坂道の手前に生える竹を効果的にレイアウトし、背後の竹藪をシルエットにすることで、奥行きのある表現になっています。
通常の浮世絵版画は、ものの輪郭を墨線で擦り、そこに色を重ね擦りして仕上げる手法。しかし、この作品の背景ではこの手法を使わずに、色の面の組み合わせで風景を描いているのです。斜線を多様した雨の構図など、広重のセンスが光る意欲的な試みです
