*薬師如来を護る大軍勢
薬師如来の眷属である十二の薬叉（やしゃ）大将。それぞれが七千の部下を率い、総勢八万四千の大軍勢で、苦行を重ねる薬師如来を悪鬼の妨害から護ります。
平安時代以降に造られた十二神将像には、十二支と結び付けた造形がみられますが、奈良時代の作であるこの群像には十二支を象徴する彫刻はありません。
*イスム こだわりの造形
モデルは現存する日本最古にして最大の十二神将像で、写実性に富む天平彫刻の代表作のひとつ。寺院縁起には秦度利による作で、もともと近くの岩淵寺にあったものを移したと書かれています。
安政元（1854）年の地震で波夷羅大将が破損しましたが、昭和6（1931）年に補われました。十二体それぞれにポーズや意匠が凝らされ、各々の個性を存分に発揮しながらも、群像として美しくまとめあげられています。
胡粉（日本画などに用いられる貝殻を砕いた粉）を塗料の中に混ぜ込むことによって、年月を経て荒れた塑像表面の質感を表現。高さ20センチほどの小さなサイズながら、甲冑や衣に残る繧繝（うんげん）華紋様まで忠実に再現しています。
