Most popular anime of 2016

Mobile software developement company jig.jp (Tokyo, Shibuya) have anounced the results of large survey among the users of popular online free market service OTAMART, that handles mostly animation, manga, and idol goods.

The survey was conducted from 2016/11/10 till 14 for the duration of 4 days, and concerned with the recent popular or trendy things in the anime/manga/light novel world.

We would like to introduce the results of the survey here.

For people who have been following the trends last year, it might be a well-expected result.

And for those, who are not yet familiar with these titles, we would like to write an introduction to these, since many of them might become classic in near future.

 

1.OSOMATSU-SAN

This anime has its roots in the old piece of work by Akatsuka Fujio, which is called “Osomatsu-kun”. This animation deals with grown-up version of “Osomatsu-kun”. The main characters are 6 Matsuno brothers with same face. Although their face is same, their personality is totally different, and due to this charismatic and special features, each of the character has a lot of fans. The animation series (25 episodes) have been broadcasted from October 2015 till March of 2016 and earned a great popularity in people from various ages, and especially women. Each of the characters has its own unique colour, due to which it is easier to differentiate between the characters, compared to the original work of Akatsuka Fujio.

The eldest of brothers is called Matsuno Osomatsu, and his image colour is red. He is the most innocent of all brothers, almost as if he has grown up with his mind remaining that of junior school student.  Due to this, he is slovenly and not well organized, but in the critical moment he is the one to take leadership, and puts other brothers together.

Second brother is called Karamatsu, and his image colour is blue. He wears his trademark sunglasses and leather jacket, and has the most embarrassing personality of all brothers. He is extreme narcisist and openly makes embarrassing remarks of this sort. Due to this personality trait, he often gets himself in trouble.

Third brother’s name is Choromatsu, image colour - green. He is the most normal person of the brothers. Compared to others, he is serious, down to earth and often the voice of reason. He likes minor idol Hashimoto Nya.

Fourth brother’s image colour is purple, and his name is Ichimatsu. He is very apathetic and does everything at his own pace. At the same time, he likes to make sarcastic comments about everything, so other brothers are worried, whether he will be able to fit in the society. Perhaps to due this character traits, his only friend is his cat.

Fifth brother is Jushimatsu, his colour is yellow, and he is incredibly cheerful and always high tension, but childish and not very smart. He always laughs and focus points of his eyes do not match, his actions are unpredictable, but at the same time, he has also polite side to him, such as he always properly greets people.

Sixth brother is Todomatsu, and his colour is pink. His communication ability is the highest of all brothers. His special traits are big eyes and charming attitude, but he has also wicked side to him, such as using his cuteness to manipulate people.

This cheerful and noisy daily life animation series about 6 brothers turned out to be a hit, and various games and goods based on it have been produced. They are so popular that magazines which feature them tend to be constantly out of stock, and before big events, the lines start to form already at night before the event day.  Even after the show has ended, the boom still continues, since fans keep making their original goods and games based on this great work.

2. Re Zero: Starting life in another world

 

This animation is based on the light novel of Mr. Nagatsuki Tappei. Actually, at first the novel was posted at the site “Shousetuka ni narou”, which is popular site in Japan for beginner writers. The animation is familiar to many by its short name “Re Zero”, and was broadcasted in Japan from April till October.

The story depicts struggling of a schoolboy Natsuki Subaru, who suddenly was summoned to another world, where he soon found to have an ability to time leap at the time of his death. Except for this, he doesn't have any special ability, and actually has a social communication problems, but once he finds himself in the middle of royal succession conflict, he has no other choice than use his only ability in order to change the destiny, and protect his friends and loved ones. Unknowingly for him, this “death time leap” ability might be not as simple as it seems…

The animation can be considered a positive example of animating a light novel. The story was already interesting, but due to the animation, the popularity of its characters has risen in a heartbeat, and is widely popular between both women and men which is not seen that often. 

Moreover, one of the characters has been proudly chosen as number one in the “Favourite characters from 2016 hits”.

Rem is one more heroine of the story, and she is from the race of “Oni”.

She works as a maid with her sister Ram in the household of Emilia (main heroine of the story and love interest of Subaru).

Rem falls in love with Subaru, despite he loves Emilia.

3. Yuri!!! on ICE

Despite this figure skate-themed anime was broadcasted in the end of the year, from October till December, it made it in the top 3 , which speaks about great popularity of this anime.

It would not be an overstatement to say, that it gathered the most attention among 2016 animations series. Especially we would like to bring attention to the wonderful choreography. The choreographer is a retired skater himself, and he first made choreography for each character, then filmed the live performance of it, and then made into the animation. Also, the real live commentators were in charge of the commentary for the animation, and real sportsmen such as Oda Nobunari and Stephane Lambiel made a guest appearance in the show. Mr. Oda said, that due to its quality and reality in the depiction of skating scenes, the animation has been popular among skaters in active service, as well as retired ones. The fan goods are very popular too, the replicas of items that were used in the show are sold out everywhere. Introduction of main characters

Katsuki Yuri、is the protagonist of the series, fifth year senior and 23 years old figure skate sportsman. At the very beginning of the story, he suffers a crushing defeat at Grand Prix Final.  At the point where Yuri loses motivation and starts to think whether he should continue competing, he unexpectedly receives an invitation from his childhood idol Viktor Nikiforov, who has come to Japan, and becomes his coach. Together, they are starting to prepare for the next Grand Prix final.

Viktor Nikiforov is  the sportsman, that main character Yuri admires. He is a living legend, having accomplished 5 consecutive wins of the World Championship in a row. He has excellent manners and rich service spirit. He is worried that his performance doesn't bring surprise and awe to people anymore, and at that time, he sees a video of Yuri’s performance, and makes a decision to become his coach. His coaching is very strict、and he points out faults in the performance with smile but without any hesitation.

Yuri Plisetskiy is another Yuri of the series, and he is a rival of the main character Yuri. Due to his appearance as a gold-haired handsome youth, he is known as “Russian fairy”. However, outside of the rink he is a bad boy. He likes fashion with depicted fierce beasts such as tiger, lion or leopard. Chasing Viktor, he came to Japan, and challenged main character to the duel on the rink, but loses and pledges to win for sure in next season. Some of the characters call him Yurio. The reason for this is, he looks alike to favourite idol of the elder sister of main hero, whose name is Takao. Due to this, sister started calling him Yurio.

Apart from these three, many other unique sportsmen make their appearance in the show. The performance, style of each sportsman is carefully crafted up to the smallest details of music and clothes.

4. Bungou Stray Dogs

Originally, Bungou Stray Dogs is a manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. It is serializing in Young Ace monthly seinen manga magazine since 2012. Anime adaptation was performed in 2016 (first season in spring, second one in autumn) by anime studio Bones (well known by Eureka Seven, Darker than Black, Soul Eater, Ouran High School Host Club etc).

Most characters in the series are named after famous literary authors (Ryuunosuke Akutagawa, Atsushi Nakajima, Osamu Dazai, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Rampo Edogawa, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain) and/or characters in their works (Juunichiro Tanizaki and his sister Naomi, main heroine of writer’s Juunichiro Tanizaki’s novel “Fool's Love” also known as “Naomi”).

This concept was a great idea to make the show more deep and interesting, since most of the characters have supernatural abilities named after famous books\novels written by authors they associate with. Ability and its name are well-connected and explained through symbolism and matches with features of each character.

Main protagonist of the series is an 18 year old boy Atsushi Nakajima, his ability is Beast Beneath the Moon, turning him into a white tiger and gives him a monster strength. Because his whole life he was called useless, he suffers from a lack of confidence that only started to change when he joined The Armed Detective Agency, group solving crimes which are considered too violent or difficult for the Military Police to handle. 

All the members of The Armed Detective Agency (protagonists’ squad along with Atsushi) are named after Japanese poets and writers, which perfectly fits their location (Japan, the city of Yokohama). Antagonistic squad of the first season is an underground organization called Port Mafia, based in Yokohama as well, so all the members of it are also named after Japanese literary figures.

During the first season members of Detective Agency are dealing with people of Port Mafia. The confrontation of these two groups is rather typical as for representatives of two opposite poles of power in the same area. However, learning more about characters’ past and ideology of each group, observing the flow of amazing story and characters development, it becomes reasonable to doubt if Port Mafia are really those “bad guys” should be defeated in the end.

Because in fact, the second season is turning out to be a three side war between 3 major groups with supernatural abilities.

This 3rd group which appears last is The Guild, American organization lead by Secret Society. Members of The Guild are mostly named after famous American writers, which is virtually separate them from other 2 groups and in the end the Guild becomes a common enemy of Yokohama based squads.

Bungou Stray Dogs has an amazing animation and perfectly designed characters. Opening theme is performed by famous music band Granrodeo (well-known for opening themes in Kuroko no Basuke and Karneval). The story has a good dynamics and a lot of action. Fights are always spectacular, with plenty of visual effects. Slice of life and humor are also top class.

Thanks to the great basic idea and incredibly composed visual and conceptual parts, Bungou Stray Dogs always takes its prize places in popularity polls. A great amount of Bungou Stray Dogs merchandise keeps being produced. Since original manga keeps publishing and there is a new anime movie planning for 2017, it would be justified to state that the story has a good potential and its popularity will keep rising.

5. ＊Touken Ranbu Hanamaru＊

This wonderful piece of work is an animation of popular online game “Touken Ranbu ONLINE”.

It has 12 series in total, and was broadcasted from October till December of 2016 year. There is at least one more planned animation based on “Touken Ranbu” franchise - Katsugeki Touken Ranbu, planned to be released in August of 2017 year. Right after its release in 2015,  the original“Touken Ranbu ONLINE” or “TouLove” for short, gained the strong support, particularly among young female audience, making somewhat of a “Sword trend” in the all corners of our country.

According to reports from museums, the number of young women that visit museums to see the real swords has significantly grown, and the sales of a certain book about swords at one point has risen to number one on Amazon.  The game is also made into musical in the same year.

The main point of the game is to collect, raise and level up “Sword boys” in order to subjugate the enemy.  The settings of the game might be somewhat confusing if you are not familiar with Japanese traditions and beliefs. The player is given the role of “Saniwa”, which can be translated as “Interpreter and spokesman of Gods” in short. In the game, Saniwa is explained as “person, who has the powers to awaken thoughts and spirit that sleep inside things”.

Due to this ability, player succeeds to awaken tukumogami (spirit of various tools, that is said to inhabit them after many years of using) of various famous swords and some other weapons, which appear in the shape of beautiful “sword boys”. He then sends them to various historical ages in order to battle mysterious enemy, that wishes to overwrite the history.

In the anime, the story revolves around favourite swords of the Shinsengumi leader Okita Souji, Yamatonokami Yasusada and Kashuu Kiyomitsu. We get to see some scenes of the daily life of our characters, which gives warm glow to our hearts. In the game, at the point of January 2017, 62 characters, from 7 main categories of weaponry have been presented. Meanwhile in the anime, 47 characters made their appearance.

6. HAIKYUU!!

Haikyuu was animated by the wonderful team from Production I.G and was adapted from a Shonen Jump serial created by Haruichi Furudate.  It aired during the spring anime season of 2014 with 25 episodes (plus the second season), was directed by Susumu Mitsunaka, written by Taku Kishimoto, and falls under the shonen-sports-comedy genre.

Our story starts off with Hinata Shoyo the main protagonist of the Haikyū!! series and his elementary volleyball team suffering their defeat in the first tournament game. Vowing vengeance towards Kageyama as his main rival during the match, Hinata joins the volleyball team at his high-school. Unfortunately for him, the very person he swore to surpass appears before him as one of his new teammates. The series then follows the struggles of the Karasuno Volleyball team and their dream of reaching the top, no matter how high it is. 

Everything here shows the characters' relationships with each other and their developments along with the moderate pacing of the show. The warm friendship and rivalry between Hinata and Kageyama was something as a viewer to look forward too.  Haikyuu has a sort of calm, simple nature that makes it different from all the action-packed, energy-filled sports anime.  

Being a show made by the same production company as the ever-popular sports anime, Kuroko no Basket, naturally there were quite tumultuous expectations for Haikyuu. And lately it exceeded all of them. The characters are all vivid and distinct, with perfect voice acting. The animation style is clean and always well-executed. There is a perfect combination of comedy, drama, art, and depth in this series that will make you eager to see the next episode. It's one of those shows you can keep watching and never get tired of.   

Character development is also a very important for any anime, and this show does a great job in providing change for the characters during the season.  All changes make those characters a lot more relatable and, thus, likeable.  The characters who do change still retain some of their old habits, but the overall change is still noticeable, which is a brilliant touch, as it adds a bit of a quirk to them.

Additionally, this show has heart; you can sense how the characters are really into the game they love and how important every single match is to them.

Even if you don't have any experience with volleyball, this show is worth checking out. You will definitely not regret it.

7. Tsukiuta. THE ANIMATION

Six Gravity and Procellarum are two rival male idol groups who happen to live in the same dorm.

Six Gravity is made up of young men who represent the months of December to May, while Procellarum’s members represent June to November. Each episode of the series will feature a different main character they way of dealing with the stresses of idol-hood, school, and living together. Each episode is like a gamble for the viewer thanks to the vast fluctuation of style between episodes. If you are a seasoned idol anime fan, you will most likely find a common and popular stereotype in each member, and most likely one that will match up to your general tastes.

12. Shiwasu Kakeru is the male representative for the month of December. Kakeru is positive and lively person who starts his day in high-spirits. He is very supportive and friendly but does feel uncomfortable when it comes to his height sometimes, especially due to him being the shortest among the two groups.

1. Mutsuki Hajime is the male representative for the month of January. He is the leader of the group and due to his charismatic character and appearance he usually becomes centre of attention without realizing. He is hailed as if he were a "King" by many, not only because of his personal appeal, but also because he is good at taking care of those around him.

2. Kisaragi Koi is the male representative for the month of February and the youngest among the members of Six Gravity and Procellarum.  Being naturally extroverted personally and good at socializing, Koi gets along very well with all members and has a lot friends from either gender.

3. Yayoi Haru is the male representative for the month of March. He is calm and gentle person, practically a mother-type figure with a big heart. Because of his high level of intelligence has earned himself the title of "Harupedia".

4. Udzuki Arata is the male representative for the month of April. Arata is a laid-back, unhurried person who does everything at his own pace. He tends to keep an expressionless face and its makes him look unsociable and coldhearted.

5. Satsuki Aoi is the male representative for the month of May. He can be described as very adult-like and level-headed person. He is very serious and diligent that is why it’s hard for him to be lazy. His handsomeness makes him quite popular among fans.

PROCELLARUM

6. Minadzuki Rui is the male representative for the month of June. Rui possesses a natural talent for music, particularly the piano. He is said to be innocent and naïve. He has the type of personality who can do unexpected things whilst maintaining a straight face.

7. Fudzuki Kai is the male representative for the month of July. Kai is popular and respected by other group members due to his bighearted nature and brotherliness. He is welcoming and accepting, and usually care about others too much, especially when it comes to the group leader Shimotsuki Shun.

8. Hadzuki You is the male representative for the month of August. He always shows a great level of professionalism and is the one with the most common sense among the others. He often ends up toying with people and causing troubles by that.

9. Nagatsuki Yoru is the male representative for the month of September, and is disciplined person who always prepares everything beforehand. Due to his high level of femininity he has earned himself the title of "Procellarum's Mother". Yoru is quite shy and prefer to avoid any work related to photoshoots.

10. Kannadzuki Iku is the male representative for the month of October. Iku is lively, and athletic, preferring to be constantly in motion compared to staying still. He decided to continue his club activity in spite of busy working schedule and is the person who pushes himself to the limit in order to reach his goals.

11. Shimotsuki Shun is the male representative for the month of November and the leader of “Procellarum”. Shun is bizarre and unpredictable, doing what he pleases without much thought or restraint. He tends to have a meaningful smile on him, and behaves or speaks mysteriously. Due to his bright appearance and charisma Shun has a ton of fans among the world.

8. Uta no Prince-sama♪ Maji LOVE legend star

Uta no Prince-sama (or UtaPri for short) is a popular game franchise, which first of all will be interested to female audience. An original visual novel tells about Haruka Nanami who dreams of becoming a composer and someday write a song for a famous idol -  Ichinose Hayato. He is Nanami’s favorite singer and the very reason she started writing music. To achieve her dreams she enters Saotome Acagemy – very famous and high-level school of art, where she meets six charismatic students (Ichinose Hayato is one of them, of course):

Ittoki Otoya. Optimistic and easy going, he was the first one, who helped Nanami in the Academy. He was also her first partner in music contest. His music instrument is guitar, shares a room with Ichinose Tokiya.

Hijikawa Masato. He decided to enter Saotome Academy after meeting Nanami, who, as he thinks, opened his eyes to the beauty of music. On opposite to Otoya, Masato is more cool, but he is going to be a singer, and does what he loves with passion. Roommate of Jinguji Ren, plays piano.

Shinomiya Natsuki. He loves cute things. Lives with one room with Kurusu Shou, and tries to get him into cute (most of the times women’s) clothing. He has one more peculiarity – when he takes off his glasses, his personality changes and he becomes Satsuki, quick-tempered music genius. Natsuki loves cooking (although he does it poorly and can poison one with his dishes) and Nanami, who remind him of his dog.

Ichinose Hayato (Tokiya). He is a famous Pop-idol; introduce himself in Academy by name of his twin-brother Tokiya. He is cold at first, but friends help to reveal him true character.

Hayato is also draws attention, as his character voice is played by Miyano Mamoru, a very famous voice actor,  who gave his voice to many central characters in well-known animes like, Death Note, Durarara, Tokyo Ghoul, Free!, Yuri on Ice, Bungo stray dogs and many others.

Jinguji Ren. Second Nanami’s savior. He was forced to join Academy by his family, so he has no interest in studying until Nanami changes his mind. Ren plays saxophone and like darts. 

Kurusu Shou. He is a nice guy, almost always wears a hat. He is afraid of high and Natsuki. His musical instrument is violin. He took a first place in Dengeki Girl’s style awards as the most popular character in girl’s oriented games in 2011.

Started as visual novel, UtaPri gained popularity and was adapted into manga and anime series. At this moment anime has four seasons and lot of fans in Japan and overseas. A-1 studio, that is responsible for its adaptation, made a bid contribute to UtaPri’s success. A-1 is famous for beautiful visualization and animation, made characters more charismatic and created a wonderful world for them to live in. Also, one has to pay attention to its music. Music is a main theme of the anime and the songs in it are very catchy.

9. B-PROJECT

B-Project, a multimedia project that started off with character songs, eventually got a manga and an anime and their next project will be a mobile app. Of course, B-Project is all about idol boys and their hardships. It is said that B-Project is written by the creators of famous Uta no prince-sama. One of the main features is that B-Project doesn’t use 3D models for their dancing themes, and in case is you don’t like 3D animation, you will enjoy it a lot.

Since B-project is an idol anime that is all about music, it is the show that you can enjoy while watching and also with music that you can put in your playlist to listen to!

A few words about the plot: the only main female character Tsubasa is a new hire in the A&R department of the major recording company Gandala Music. She is immediately assigned to oversee the idol unit "B-PROJECT," which is made up of three idol groups: Kitakore, Thrive, and MooNs. This is Tsubasa's first job, and she is basically thrown into the position of A&R and must work hard for the different groups making up B-Project.

Each episode consists of the group getting a job to help improve B-Project while dealing with hardship and conflicts between the members. You will also get acquainted with all members, their personalities and daily life.

KITAKORE

Kitakore is the smallest group of two man.

Ryuji Korekuni is girly looking and typically has candy in his mouth. His family is in the entertainment business but Korekuni uses his own merit to get into B-Project. Tomohisa Kitakado is the more responsible half of Kitakore who’s from a rich family. Both of them are really close and have the most harmonious duet.

THRIVE

THRIVE is made up of the playboy Kento Aizome, Goushi Kaneshiro a guy who likes music and singing but dislikes idols, and positive and active Yuta Ashu.

They each have different personalities so they are actually quite hard to get along. Therefore, their arguing dialogues are quite amusing and play a big role in the comedy segment.

MOONS

MOONs is composed of the leader Kazuna Masunaga who is kind but serious, Momotaro Onzai who can see spirits, Mikado Sekimura who is very energetic,Tatsuhiro Nome who is generally quiet but has a good friendship with MooNs final member Hikaru Osari, a rather bizarre guy who goes all out for his job.

The one good thing about any idol anime is that the music is extremely good. This anime's opening theme is catchy and it definitely matches up the anime well as it keeps the audience pumped up. The insert songs for each group are amazing as they bring out the unique voice of each member, making them sound like one. B-project has quite big audience among the teens, and there are a lot of anime accessories related to the characters.

10. Love Live! Sunshine!!

Get acquainted to the world of kawaii idols!

Love Live! Sunshine!! is the successor to the popular Love Live! School Idol Project, which was quite popular in 2013.

The story starts in the beach side city of Numazu where lives Chika Takami – a girl who’s always considered herself nothing but ordinary. But after viewing μ's winning performance at the Love Live school idols’ tournament, she is inspired to start her own school idol group and follow in their footsteps.

Initially starting the group with her best friend You Watanabe, they are soon joined by Otonokizaka transfer student Riko Sakurauchi and first years Yoshiko Tsushima, Hanamaru Kunikida and Ruby Kurosawa. Though initially facing opposition from Ruby’s third year sister and student council president Dia, the six eventually become nine as Dia joins with her classmates Kanan Matsuura and Mari Ohara.

You’d think an anime about becoming a school idol would be hard to relate to, but the writing in the series instead focuses on each girl’s individual struggles and how they use friendship to overcome them.
